First day at an Internet Center

November 22, 2007
I’ve been thinking of posting this since a very long time. My first entry to my most visited section of the college – The Internet Kiosk.

Having become a net-addict by the end of our competitive exams, I would very often be seen hooked on to Orkutting, Chatting, Forumming and Googling… Then came 22th July and I had to part off with my Internet connection. 10 days passed. *sigh* Really long they were. It was 1 August. My first day at college. I’d already known that it had an Internet center where students could surf the NET. I heaved a very long sigh.

I merrily entered into it on 2nd Aug. For your kind information, all the PCs are powered by either FC or RHEL. The Net admin narrated me a long list of strict no-nos inside the center. Here they are:

  • 1 hour/day or 1 sitting /day, whichever is earlier.
  • No Chatting. ( All GAIMing ports are blocked. Infact most ports are.)
  • No Orkutting. ( Majority of proxies are blocked)
  • No Music, Sports sites.
  • No downloading warez. (Even if you did, how would you carry em back home ? No USB ports/CD/Floppy Drives 🙂
  • This one’s pretty obvious. No P***.
Yeah. I know. Although there are loads of way through these restrictions, once caught, you’re screwed. The above things can be bypassed by:
  • Use Meebo.(Dunno why its not blocked) Or use Gmail, or use yahoo’s chat widget. Simple.
  • There are loads of new domains which lead to the famous proxy sites. Hence, no website restrictions anymore. Also, new proxies crop up everyday. Keep an eye on them.
  • Download through proxies.
For the last two however, there’s no solution. Anyway, who’s want to really download stuffs at a measly 15KBps 😛

Its getting khooooler…

November 15, 2007
Yeah right, the winter has come. Add to that short bouts of drizzle and you get a cool cool Kolkata. Days are getting shorter, the nights, longer. Also, the duration of my sleep is increasing. I don’t quite have proper winter clothing and I can’t really go home before 25th Dec. Gah~ I’ll have to make do with just one pull-over and a jacket.
Winter also means that bathing frequency decreases. Aah…can’t think of more things that Winter relates to… Someone help me ?

Its Childrens’ Day ?

November 14, 2007
Whoa! I didn’t even realise it was Children’s day until I heard about it on FM today. Seriously speaking, even till class 12th, I knew of it a long time before the date. Yeah, that used to be our day. We used to have performances put up by our teachers and all of us friends used to make it a point to exploit the day to the max. Till class 10th, we used to have a Teachers v/s students cricket match scheduled on that day every year and the teachers managed to win it every time
I still remember those days and sigh at times… But its different now. We aren’t exactly children, being 19 and hence ‘No Children’s Day’ for us. *sigh* Dunno about my other friends, but I really missed those performances, those matches, that masti without any inhibition. Anyway, in college we manage to have that last bit every day 😛

Note: The countdown to Sems begins. 19 days to go 🙂

Of Bandhs and Engg. Graphics…

November 13, 2007

West Bengal(WB) can very well be called the Land of Frequent Bandhs. I don’t think any Indian state is so frequently brought to a standstill like our Bengal. WB was supposed to have a 48 hour bandh starting from 6 am, 12th Nov. However, it was just a 24 hour Bandh. We ECE guys had to submit our engg. graphics sheets on Monday(12th).

I had 5 pending graphics sheets so I came to the hostel early on Sunday(11th). I really wanted to get rid of the graphics job and get along with my studies… So, I started working on em and finished em by 4:30 am (12th) 🙂 I got up at 9:30 am the next day (As it was a Bandh, remember? ) and then again slept for 4 hours during the afternoon. As you can see ,the Bandh day was quite neatly utilised and hoping that today would also be a Bandh , I didn’t bother sleeping early yesterday night… Gah

Nascent 2007

November 8, 2007
That….. was our freshers. It was organised on 3rd Nov and we really had a a blast. We had 3 separate band performances within the college and they performed a couple of songs by Pantera, Nirvana, IM and a few more. Guitarists and the drummers literally rocked the Auditorium…. Yeah, we also had some really …really sexy dances being performed by some seniors and some hip-hop fusion dance performances by our college dance troupe. We ECE dept guys didn’t have our dept. freshers before. This was the only fresher party given to us. Yeah, the only one. *sigh* . A DJ-nite was organised complete with disco lights, a non-existent DJ, some loud music and 5% girls among the crowd….*sigh*

Naaa… we enjoyed it all. This was perhaps the first time I saw a pro rock band performing live in front of me…. That was Resurrection, our college band. However, a fucking power-cut after their ‘Rape me’ performance really sucked…. they had 6 more songs in their play list…. Gah~ anyway, we’ll get our share of music in the Eclecia-2007 fer sure… \m/
